Taking care of your handcrafted piece

With a little bit of love and care your handcrafted textile pieces will last for a long time. We have put together some basic care guidelines that typically apply for handloom and hand printed textile items. However, always refer to the wash care instructions on your garment label.

  • WASHING

Correct washing and drying makes your clothes last longer and keeps the colours looking as good as new. In general, it is always best to hand wash your natural textile piece in cold or room temperature water. Alternatively, you can wash some pieces on a gentle, cold wash cycle in the washing machine. We always recommend using a laundry bag of the appropriate size. Do not leave your items soaking. Once washed and rinsed clean, do not wring to remove excess water. Gently squeeze excess water (use a towel if you need to), then shake out the garment and line dry in shade. Do not tumble dry.

For silks and wools, especially, be gentle. Flat dry your wools, in shade.

All garments have a care label. If in doubt, please follow instructions as mentioned.

  • IRONING

Some of us love it, some of us hate it, but it always makes every outfit look better. In fact, ironing correctly can increase the lifespan of your clothes. It all comes down to the fabric of your garment and the heat and method used for ironing.
Always look at the garment label for specific instructions.

    Below are some general guidelines.

  • COTTON

Using high heat is ok for cotton. Dampening the item, or spraying it with a bit of water (either with a bottle or with the spray function of your iron) helps iron out stubborn creases. Handheld steam irons are ok to use.

  • LINEN

Like cotton, linen can handle high heat. Use water spray to remove stubborn creases. Handheld steam irons are ok to use.

  • COTTON-SILK

Cotton silk can handle medium heat. Iron on reverse and try to use a press cloth on stubborn creases if needed. Handheld steam irons are ok to use.

  • SILK

This is a more delicate fabric and it is advised to use medium to low heat. Always iron on the reverse. Ideally use a press cloth on top of the silk item to prevent any damage. If using a handheld steam iron, use the lowest setting with the appropriate attachments.

  • WOOL

Like with silk, use medium to low heat, and use a press cloth. Iron on reverse. Let the garment cool down before storing. If using a handheld steam iron, use the lowest setting with the appropriate attachments.

If you don’t know the material of the outfit, start with the lowest heat setting and first try ironing on the reverse close to an inner seam. Do not test iron a garment on the front / bodice.
